Algarve´s Magical Village of Alvor

Algarve´s little fishermen village of Alvor dates back to the 5th century. It is a magical place, with not even 7000 people living in its white houses. We´ve visited twice, the first time staying with friends, and now camping at Camping Alvor. During our six days stay, we not only explored the local beach with its beautiful walking paths along the Alvor delta, but also ventured out as far as Lagos and even Villamoura. But we´ll talk about that in a different post.

In order to reach the beach, you can cross the wooden passadiço de Alvor which crosses golden dunes and stretches for 6km (you do not have to do the whole walk even though it´s super beautiful especially at sunset), finally reaching the Praia do Alvor Poente.

While in Lisbon we usually opt for small unsupervised beaches due to our dog Yoshi, in Alvor we managed to sunbathe on its long white sanded beach without anyone complaining about Yoshi. We chose the right side of the beach and had a huge patch of sand for ourselves. Alternatively, you can head to the left tip and explore the Praia dos Três Irmãos.

Once you´re done sunbathing for the day (can one ever have enough of sunbathing?), head out to Alvor´s downtown for dinner and drinks! When it comes to food, since we wanted the full camping experience, we didn´t eat out much, but we did go back to a restaurant we loved last time we were here - Casa da Maré. And surely enough, we loved it once again! They´re pretty dog friendly and their sea food is just amazing. Goes to tell that you´re in a fishermen village! I strongly recommend their octopus salad (it has the perfect consistency and is an ideal meal for a hot summer day) as well as their ameijoas (clams) à bulhão pato (they manage to perfectly balance the sauce of white wine, lemon, butter and olive oil). The restaurant next door, Zé Morgadinho also looks adorable and has an odd Greek vibe about it. In reality, the whole downtown is full of bars and restaurants so just take your pick!

Alvor is a perfect little town whether you´re going there with your partner, your family or with your crazy group of friends. It basically has something for every taste. Whether you choose to camp, like we did, rent out a small apartment with a pool, or stay at the glamorous Pestana Alvor Praia, Alvor promises to be a perfect little retreat and we couldn´t be happier that we chose to end our summer like this!
