Snowy Postcards from Sibiu, The City Where Houses Have Eyes
In the heart of Transylvania lies the city of Sibiu, or Hermannstadt - as some locals proudly like to call it. It´s a small city, protected by mountains, where people are slow and houses are colourful. But walking around its snowy, medieval streets, one gets the unsettling feeling of being watched. You turn around, but no one is there. You look left and right, and still no one. An odd feeling tells you to look up and that´s when you see it. The houses´ roofs have eyes staring suspiciously and cheekily at you. Built between the 16th and 19th centuries, the eye-shaped windows in the roofs had the purpose of airing the attics. But while many houses all over the world have attics, I have never seen eyes on houses anywhere but in Sibiu. They´re the magical little details that make my hometown unique. During our visit there last week, I took my gloves off for a few minutes on both a gloomy and a sunny day to take a few snapshots of snowy houses to show you. So reader, meet Sibiu - the city where houses have eyes.
