Unique day trip from Amsterdam
If you are staying in Amsterdam for longer and wish to explore something outside the city of bikes, something different than going to see old windmills or fields of tulips, something a bit more local, then I have the right day trip for you.
I went here with my Dutch friends, who call it their secret spot (sorry for sharing friends!). It is a 30 minutes drive from Amsterdam, called Wijk Aan See, a dreamy place with sand dunes, massive wind turbines and endless kite beaches.
We went on a windy and cold, but very sunny day and when we arrived, seeing a port and wind turbines was not my idea of a day trip. But after parking the car and walking along the sea canal for 10 minutes, we arrived to a place of magic. A long and wide stretch of golden beach, with colorful wooden beach huts that served as surf shops or restaurants. You could only hear the sound of the wind and everything seemed to have a touch of light. One of the beach huts is Aloha - Wijk Aan See, a trendy restaurant/ beach bar with a cozy fireplace.
In Aloha, we were transported from a forgotten beach to a buzzing vibe, with elaborate snacks, fresh ginger teas and groups of friends with their kids. We spent a long afternoon there, between chilling around the fireplace and walking on the beach. Needless to say the sunset was just amazing.
